Pro-hunting campaign rolls out nationally
15th February 2010

RISE! Rural Ireland Says Enough! – the campaign formed recently to promote and defend traditional rural field sports – has begun stepping up its campaigning efforts nationally.

This week, more than five hundred hunting, shooting and angling clubs in every county will receive a briefing pack and petition forms from the RISE! campaign headquarters, based in Ashbourne, county Meath. The briefing pack advises local supporters on how to approach individual TDs, Senators and county councillors to win their support for the campaign’s objectives.

The RISE! petition asks people to sign up to oppose proposals from the Minister for the Environment, John Gormley TD, to curb the operation of hunt kennels, ban stag hunting by the Ward Union Hunt as well as introducing new legal restrictions on horse and greyhound racing and the management of farm animals. Petition forms can also be downloaded or signed online at the new campaign website www.risecampaign.ie

RISE! activists have been lobbying Senators recently in relation to provisions in the Dog Breeding Establishments Bill 2009 which the
Seanad will again tomorrow (Tuesday, 16th February). The Bill, intended to outlaw so-called puppy ‘farming’, is seriously flawed because it applies to voluntary hunt kennels which never sell pups for commercial gain.

The steering group of RISE! includes representatives of FACE Ireland, the Hunting Association of Ireland and the Ward Union Hunt Club. FACE is the Federation of Associations for Hunting and Conservation of the European Union, a non-profit making, non-governmental organisation that has acted in the interests of over seven million European hunters since its foundation in 1977.

A spokesperson for RISE! said: ‘We are encouraged by the response we have been receiving from politicians through contacts at national level.   However, if we’re to succeed, they need to start getting the message at constituency level. This is the next phase of our campaign.’
