Fianna Fáil TD backs pro-hunting campaign on Facebook
8th March 2010
South Tipperary Fianna Fáil TD, Mattie McGrath, is the first elected representative to join the Facebook group supporting the RISE! Rural Ireland Says Enough! Campaign.
RISE! is campaigning to promote and defend traditional rural pastimes like hunting, coursing and angling against new legal restrictions being promoted by the Green Party in government. The Renegotiated Programme for Government includes a proposal to ban stag hunting by the Ward Union Hunt, based in county Meath.
Deputy McGrath has stated that he stands ‘four square’ behind rural pursuits and that he hoped John Gormley’s proposals can be amended to accommodate each side of the debate. Earlier this year, Deputy McGrath and Deputy John McGuinness, Fianna Fáil (Carlow-Kilkenny) supported the RISE! call for a free vote on the issue in the Dáil and Seanad.
A spokesman for RISE! said: ‘It may be too early to compare Mattie’s support for our Facebook group with the Senator Dan Boyle Tweet that ended the Ministerial career of Willie O’Dea TD. It certainly underlines the power of social networking media in politics now. We hope it will
encourage other TDs and Senators to support our campaign and our call for a free vote on a matter of conscience.’
The Facebook Group ‘I support RISE! Rural Ireland Says Enough’ currently has more than 1,600 members.
